Sandies, Sandiettes Win District Golf Championship

Grapeland, Latexo Qualify for Regionals

NORMANGEE – Both the Grapeland Sandies and Sandiettes were crowned as District 20-2A Champions in golf following their rounds on Monday, April 1. The competition was held at the Hilltop Lakes Golf Course outside of Normangee.

As a team, the defending Class 2A State Champion Sandiettes finished in first place with a score of 348. Cheney Boyd and Hannah Chipman both shot an 83 to lead the way for the Sandiettes. Boyd bested Chipman on the third playoff hole to claim top honors.

Mary Jane Watson finished in third place individually with an 88. Rounding out the team scores Carly Parker shot a 94 and finished fourth, Tori Woodford had a 104, Amy Crook shot a 117 and Gracie Conner had a 128.

The Latexo Lady Tigers finished second as a team with a combined score of 469. Kyndall Sulewski paced Latexo with a 100 and finished sixth while Madison Catoe shot a 110. Maggie Gibbins shot a 124 and Maddison Land finished with a 135.

The Leon Lady Cougars finished third with a combined total of 532. Sarah Rains carded a 113 to lead the Lady Cougars while Lori Pervis shot a 132. Tori Salley had a 143, Grace Hull had a 144 and Abby Lim shot 152.

Lovelady Lady Lion Baylee Granberry was the fifth low scoring individual as she shot a 96.

On the boys’ side of the course, the two-time defending Class 2A State Champion Grapeland Sandies finished first as a team with a combined score of 344. The Sandies were led by Rick Frauenberger who finished in first place with a 71. Jack Woodford finished second with a 76 and Jason Bobbitt was fourth with an 83. Josh Ackley was sixth with a 114 and Blake Howard carded a 119.

Other individual golfers included Seth Campbell from Lovelady who finished third with an 82. Noah Hoch from Latexo was fifth with 103, Brooks Baker from Slocum carded a 117 and EJ Sandoval from Lovelady had a 125.

The Leon Cougars were also represented at the tournament as Ethan Williams shot a 148, Travis Burroughs recorded a 151 and Joey Sandoval had a 154.

The Region III Golf Tournament will be held at Pine Dunes Resort and Golf Club in Frankston. The boys are scheduled to play April 22 and 23 while the girls are scheduled to play on April 24 and 25.
