GRAPELAND – After coming up just short last year, the Grapeland Sandies and Sandiettes are back in the thick of things in the 2018-2019 race for the Lone Star Cup.

While it has been around for several years, the Lone Star Cup is still relatively unknown to many people in the local area.

According to the UIL website, “The UIL Lone Star Cup is awarded annually to six high schools, one in each of the six UIL classifications (1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A and 6A), based on their team performance in district and state championships. The winning schools in each classification will receive the UIL Lone Star Cup trophy and a $1,000 scholarship, also presented by the UIL. Honoring the best overall athletic and academic programs in Texas, the UIL Lone Star Cup is open to all UIL participant high schools.”

In the 2017-2018 school year, the Sandies and Sandiettes finished alone in third with 60 points, while Mason was first with 70 and Sundown was second with 67.

As of Monday, March 25 – Grapeland was in fifth position with several events yet to be figured into their final score.

Currently, Sundown is in first with 50 points, Thorndale is in second with 44, Mason is in third with 40 and Martin’s Mill is in fourth with 39.

The Sandies and Sandiettes have a current total of 38 points and are tied with Gruver. This total, however, only includes: team tennis, cross country, marching band, volleyball, robotics BEST, football, Congress, spirit, swimming and diving, wrestling, mariachi, film and basketball.

The Sandiettes picked up two points for a volleyball playoff berth while the Sandies picked up four points for their district championship in football plus two points each for the Bi-District and Area Championships.

In basketball, the boys added 12 points to the total while the girls added 16 for their Class 2A State Runners-Up finish.

What the standings do not include are the points to be awarded later this spring in: robotics FIRST, soccer, academics, one-act play, theatrical design, track and field, golf, tennis, softball and baseball.

Given the remaining events and with strong squads in both baseball and softball, along with both the defending Class 2A State Champions in girls’ and boys’ golf, the Sandies and Sandiettes have a very legitimate shot of bringing the Lone Star Cup to Grapeland.

Other area schools currently in the Lone Star Cup Top 10 include the Class 1A Neches Tigers with 34 and the Class 1A Oakwood Panthers with 28. Neches is currently third and Oakwood is eighth in the Class 1A standings.

The standings will become final on July 1, 2019.
