D. L. Pugh

D. L. Pugh, age 88, of Crockett passed away Oct. 2, 2017. He was born Nov. 19, 1928 on the banks of the Trinity River near Ash, Texas and was the youngest of ten children born to John Thomas Pugh and Willie Geneva Hopper Pugh.

He was a member of the Porter Springs Baptist Church.

D.L. graduated from Austonio School in 1947 where he was offered a scholarship to play basketball but he declined because of his love and life dream of being a cowboy. D.L. always wanted to be a cowboy like his brother Deb.

He had the pleasure of working some of the biggest ranches in the area. J.R. Parten and John Merriwether at the 7J and Big 4, Lightning Arrow, and the Cauble Ranch.

Later in life he began studies at Sam Houston State University, where he lacked only nine hours from obtaining a degree in Criminal Justice.

After retiring with twenty years of service at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, he served as manager of Triangle C Ranch for Kenneth and Shirley Cory.

D.L. never met a stranger and loved to tell “stories” about his childhood memories with his family and friends, his many predicaments and situations he encountered as a cowboy. He always had a captivated audience.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Jean Robinson Pugh; son, Dusty Pugh and wife, Marsha; daughters, Pam Pugh and Liz Currie and husband, Button; grandchildren, Jason Driskell and wife, Brandi, Cody Pugh and wife, Emily, Matt Currie and wife, Sarah, Casey Currie and fiancé, Frank, Courtney Beasley and husband, Derek, Crystal Crouch and fiancé, Ryan; great-grandchildren, Josh West and wife, Maygan, John Clay Pugh, Sean Driskell, Ty Pugh, Eli Currie, Camryn Currie and Morgan Beasley; great-great-grandchild, Paxton West; brother, Roy Pugh and wife, Mary; three sisters-in-law; and a host of nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Willie Pugh; brothers, Elwyn, Leonard, Deb and Cody; sisters, Winnie Fuller, Syble Baucom Brown and twin sisters who died as infants.

Funeral services for D.L. Pugh were held Thursday, Oct. 5, 2017 at 10 a.m. in the Callaway-Allee Memorial Chapel with Rev. Jason Driskell officiating. Interment followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park. The family received friends Wednesday evening from 5-7 p.m.
