Week Eight: Playoff Picture Starts to Take Focus

EAST TEXAS – The weeks are rapidly dwindling in the 2016 football season and several area teams are emerging as contenders for postseason play.

At the Class 4A level the Palestine Wildcats had a bye this week. The Wildcats are currently holding down the fourth playoff spot coming out of District 9-4A and have big matchup with the Chapel Hill Bulldogs this Friday. Palestine has a district record of 1-2 and an overall record of 4-3.  Chapel Hill has a district mark of 1-3 and an overall record of 2-6. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 on Friday, Oct. 21 at Palestine’s Wildcat Stadium.

At the Class 3A Level, the Crockett Bulldogs got back to their winning ways as they hammered the Corrigan-Camden Bulldogs by a score of 60-32. Crockett is tied for the second seed in District 10 – 3A DII, with a 1-1 district mark and a 6-1 overall record. Their only loss has been to the number one ranked team in Class 3A DII, the Newton Eagles. The Bulldogs take on the Frankston Indians this Friday in a Homecoming match-up from Monte Jack Driskell Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Speaking of the Indians, they defeated the Hemphill Hornets by a score of 30-20. The win gives the Indians a 1-1 record in district and an overall record of 4-3.

The Elkhart Elks traveled to Eustace this past Friday for a matchup with the Eustace Bulldogs and got a much needed victory to keep their playoffs hopes alive. The Elks defeated the Bulldogs by a final score of 34-24 to move their district record to 2-2 and their overall record to 4-3.

Elkhart is currently tied for fourth place in District 9-3A DI with the Groesbeck Goats. This week, Elkhart has a home game against the Whitney Wildcats. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

The Westwood Panthers fell to the Malakoff Tigers by a score of 42-14. The loss drops the Panthers to 1-6 on the season and 0-4 in District 9-3A DI.

At the 2A level, the Lovelady Lions kept rolling as they hammered the Deweyville Pirates by a final score of 43-0. The win keeps the Lions regular season winning streak intact at 19 in a row. The Lions take on the Centerville Tigers in a big District 12-2A DI showdown in Lovelady this Friday at 7:30 p.m.

The Grapeland Sandies suffered a hard loss at the hands of the Timpson Bears last Friday by a score of 26-12. The loss drops the Sandies to 0-2 in District 11-2A DII and gives them an overall record of 3-4. Grapeland hits the road this week for a Saturday game against Tenaha. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.

In other action from the gridiron this past Friday, the Cayuga Wildcats defeated the Hawkins Hawks by a final of 42-6. The win keeps them one game behind the district leaders with three left to play.

Also, the Madisonville fell Mustangs fell to the Shepherd Pirates 30-20 and the Oakwood Panthers had a bye this week.
