Masonic Lodge to Host Annual Cook-Off
The Lovelady Masonic Lodge will once again sponsor this year’s annual Lovefest Cook-Off on Saturday, Feb. 11.
Space usually accommodates 35 teams; and entries can no longer be accepted once the spaces are filled, or after midnight on Friday, Feb. 10.
Contestants can enter two categories at the minimum entry fee of $110 per team. A $10 charge will be added for each additional category.
Categories include barbeque ribs, barbeque brisket, chicken, chili, pinto beans and jack pot beans.
The barbeque ribs, brisket and chicken rules state the raw meat must be inspected by an official before cooking begins. The chili must be made from scratch and cooked on site. The pinto beans will have to be dry and can’t include rice or noodles. Jackpot beans will receive an 80 percent payout.
Contestants can not sell their products, but their food will be sold at the concessions after the judging contest.
A Calcutta auction on the brisket and chicken will be held Friday night as well.
The cooks will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Cook-Off headquarters.
The chili judging begins at noon. Ribs start at 1 p.m., pinto beans are at 2 p.m., chicken is at 3 p.m. and the barbeque brisket will be judged at 4 p.m. Awards will be presented at 4:30 p.m.
This year’s judge is Pam Yates from Crosby, Texas. The official pit Boss is Billy Jones, and special guest are Charlotte and Trish-The ‘Gold Dust Twins.’
First, second and third place awards will go to all categories except the jackpot beans. The first place team in each category has the opportunity to receive $100.
One first place showmanship prize of $100 will also be awarded.
