Monday, December 12th, 2011

The Grapeland FFA participated in the State Leadership Contest at Sam Houston State University on Friday, Dec. 2 and Saturday, Dec. 3. The Senior Quiz Team placed 10th in a very close and challenging competition. Atlana Watson was the fourth high individual. Other team members were Julie Riess, Brittany McCoy and Liz Diehl.

While at the State Leadership Contest, Grapeland’s team had the opportunity to have lunch with Mr. Tom Maynard, who is the Executive Director of the FFA and one of the Deputy Commissioners of Education in Texas for Career and Technology classes. The visit was interesting as well educational. The students heard a lot about the behind the scenes working of running an organization of over 80,000 members, career opportunities, and about a lot of interesting people and celebrities that have come through the FFA that Mr. Maynard as had the pleasure to know. One thing they wanted to know was how he went from high school FFA member to Executive Director in TEA. It was a great opportunity and we thank Mr. Maynard for taking time to have lunch with us and visit.
