ANDERSON – The Crockett Bulldogs did their part on Tuesday evening, defeating Anderson-Shiro 77-38 to keep pace with the Trinity Tigers. Unfortunately, the New Waverly Bulldogs weren’t able to do their part, as Trinity was able to down New Waverly 65-50 to clinch their first outright district title since 1998, leaving Crockett as the second seed going into the playoffs.
Instead, the Bulldogs rode a strong start by senior AD Smith to jump ahead of Anderson-Shiro, and they never looked back in their regular season finale.
Crockett would fly out of the gates in the first quarter, outscoring Anderson-Shiro 26-4 in the opening quarter of the night. Crockett was unable to do anything wrong either offensively or defensively, as the Owls struggled mightily against the Bulldogs in the early goings. Smith would score 12 points for the Bulldogs in the opening quarter including a pair of three pointers, helping ignite the Bulldogs offense.
The intensity would get turned up a few notches in the second quarter behind a 31-point outburst by the Bulldogs offense. Colby Berry torched the Owls defense for nine points, and Tevin Collins chipped in eight more as the Bulldogs put more space between themselves and the Owls. After outscoring Anderson-Shiro 31-14 in the second quarter, Crockett would cruise into the half with a 57-18 lead.
In a more slowed down pace, the Bulldogs would coast to the finish in the second half. A subdued Bulldogs offense would put up just 13 points in the third quarter and only nine points in the fourth quarter. Despite the slowed pace of play offensively for the Bulldogs, Anderson-Shiro would still find themselves unable to close the gap between the two teams, as Crockett would go on to seal the 77-38 road victory.
The Bulldogs had three players in double figures offensively and 10 different players score in the winning effort. Smith led the Bulldogs with 19 points offensively, including 17 in the first half to almost match the Owls 18 points.
Tevin Collins would add 15 points for the Bulldogs, 12 of which came in the first half, while Colby Berry would add 12 points in the Bulldogs win.
Xavier Berry added eight points offensively in the win, while fellow junior Michael McKnight and senior Dominique Wheeler would score seven points apiece. Adrian Dupree would drain a three-pointer for his lone basket of the night, while Carlton Shirley, CJ Wheeler, and Red Simon would each score two points for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs will begin to prepare for the playoffs, where they will kick things off in the Bi-District Championship against either Hardin or Buna. The two teams tied for third to end the regular season, and will play for the chance to face the #7 Bulldogs in the opening round of the playoffs. Results for this game were unavailable as of press time.
First the Bulldogs will travel to Athens to face the Hornets in a warm-up game on the campus of Trinity Valley Community College. Results for that game were also unavailable as of press time.
The winner will advance to the Area Championship to face the 22-2A champion Central Heights Blue Devils. After spending most of the year ranked inside the top 10 in class 2A, the Blue Devils were upset just before the end of district by Newton, dropping the Blue Devils to #11 in the latest TABC (Texas Association of Basketball Coaches).
Last year the Bulldogs defeated Central Heights 62-39 before kicking off district play.
