Here is a look at Tuesday’s area action:
Kennard Tigers 67 – Martinsville Pirates 79
Looking to pull off a big upset and topple the Martinsville Pirates on Tuesday night, the Kennard Tigers fell slightly short, dropping a 12-point decision to the 15th ranked Pirates. Kenyata Benton opened the scoring for Kennard with a monster dunk that energized the Tigers throughout the night.
Kennard hit the road to face Groveton-Centerville on Friday night. The Tigers defeated the Bulldogs 85-38 in their first meeting of district play.
The Tigers will return home on Tuesday, February 7 when the #14 Wells Pirates come into town.
Slocum Mustangs 79 – Latexo Tigers 46
The Slocum Mustangs jumped out to a 25-9 lead after the first quarter, and led 48-24 at the half as they defeated the Latexo Tigers 79-46 on Tuesday night. Despite a closer score in the second half, the Mustangs would cruise to the district win, clinching a playoff spot and eliminating the Tigers from playoff contention.
Fletcher Larkin would score 22 for Slocum with Reagan Bowman added 14 and Jason Neal chipping in 11 points.
Tyler Taylor would lead Latexo with 15 points while Creagor Elsom would add 11 points.
Slocum hosted Grapeland on Saturday for homecoming and will close district on Friday, February 10 when they travel to face Alto.
Latexo was off on Friday night, but will travel to face Alto on Tuesday, February 7 before closing district on Friday, February 10 in Lovelady.
Slocum Lady Mustangs 54 – Latexo Lady Tigers 18
The Slocum Lady Mustangs punched their playoff ticket with another big win over the Latexo Lady Tigers. Slocum led 35-4 at the half before finishing off the 54-18 win at home.
Valerie Larkin led the team with 19 points. Landry Lane added 10 points with Kelsee Webb adding nine points in the win.
Slocum hosted Grapeland on Friday with a chance to clinch the second seed in district 23-1A, and finish the regular season.
Latexo was off Friday, but will travel to face Alto on Tuesday, February 7 to close out the season.
Elkhart Lady Elks 34 – Frankston Maidens 43
The Elkhart Lady Elks trailed by three after the first quarter, but two big quarters by Frankston would put the Lady Elks in a 38-19 hole after the third quarter. Elkhart would charge back into the game, outscoring Frankston 15-5 in the final quarter, but fell short in the heartbreaking 43-34 loss.
Tracey Clewis led the Lady Elks with 15 points on the night while junior Catie Bridges added 12 points in the loss. Angel Smith, Alicia Lipscomb, and Robin Grant scored two points apiece for the Lady Elks.
The Lady Elks traveled to face Winona on Friday night and will return home on Tuesday, February 7 to close the season out against the West Rusk Lady Raiders.
Sandiettes def. Alto Lady ‘Jackets
The Grapeland Sandiettes dominated from start to finish, as they cruised to an easy win over Alto on Tuesday night, solidifying their playoff positioning. The Sandiettes now sit a half game back of Slocum for the second seed in district 23-1A play.
The Sandiettes traveled to face Slocum in a big showdown on Saturday afternoon. Grapeland will return home on Tuesday, February 7 to host the district leading Lovelady Lady Lions to close out the regular season.
Crockett Lady Bulldogs def. Onalaska Lady ‘Cats
The Crockett Bulldogs made it look easy in a blowout win over Onalaska on Tuesday night. In a complete team effort the Lady Bulldogs cruised to their second big win over Onalaska this year, and clinching a playoff berth. The win allows Crockett to hold their one game lead over New Waverly going into Friday’s district showdown.
After hosting New Waverly on Friday for Senior Night, the Lady Bulldogs will travel to face the Groveton Lady Indians on Tuesday, February 7 to close the regular season.
