GRAPELAND - The Grapeland City Council passed a resolution to join Tex 21, a group of private companies and public officials whose goal is to improve transportation throughout Texas. This action was taken at Tuesday night’s regular meeting.

As April has been designated Confederate History Month in the state of Texas, I thought it might be helpful to remind our citizens of our great heritage, and to give a briefing on the War for Southern Independence and direct our attention to points of interest that do not seem to appear in our politically correct history books anymore.

GRAPELAND - Dr. K.L. Groholski, superintendent of schools at Grapeland ISD, released the following statement on April 3, 2012.

“In the last few days, there has been rumor and speculation about Grapeland ISD’s actions regarding the former band director, who resigned effective immediately last week. We learned today that he has been arrested, and according to media reports, he has admitted to improper behavior with a student.

Elkhart Elks played the Frankston Indians at home Wednesday night and improved their District record to 3-0 and their overall record to 16 -1 by defeating the Indians 7 – 1. Cam Reeves gets his sixth win on the season and throws a one hitter. Cole Bridges, Cam Reeves and Tyler Tutt had doubles and Cam was 2 for 4 and Jacob Cheatham was 3 for 3. The Elks will be at home Friday night against Winona. The JV will start at 4:30 p.m. and the Varsity will play shortly afterwards.

Megan Dubé is riding 1000 miles by horse through the Lone Star State to live out a dream of hers: to ride 1000 miles and become a member of the Long Rider’s Guild while celebrating and counseling the people who are emotionally struggling and wanting to celebrate and share their lives with her.

We would like to thank those of you who came out to join us and participate on our Karaoke Night in February. We had a great time! You can look for Tom T and Friends at the Grapeland Senior Citizens Center every first Friday of each month. Our upcoming program will be Friday, March 2 at 7 p.m., so come on out and join in the fun for some 'good ole country' karaoke music. Admission is free. All donations will go to the Senior Center. Audience participation is welcome!

The training consists of on-site training, online training, and continued support through group phone calls.

Worship over the next two weeks  will consist of a series of stand alone sermons.  This week the focus will be from the readings in 2 Kings 2:1 -12 (Lost Heroes).  Feb. 19 is Transfiguration Sunday, and that will be our focus in worship. There will be a 7 p.m. Service with the imposition of ashes on Ash Wednesday, Feb.

The Friends of the Palestine Public Library will hold its annual meeting Thursday, Feb. 16, at 6 p.m. at Ben E. Keith, 2019 West Oak, in Palestine. The Friends support the library by raising funds through projects like quarterly book sales and membership drives.

The Grapeland Senior Citizens Center has passed its 25th birthday, so volunteers and the Board of Directors have decided it is time to “redress” the interior with new paint.

Under the leadership of Linda Giorgio and Jim Wilcox, the project is underway, and contractor David Wilshusen hopes to have the building looking pretty for the upcoming fundraiser scheduled for Friday, Feb 10. The fundraiser will feature a fabulous meal of chili and all the trimmings for donations. Delicious beans are a favored option.

Elkhart Middle School is offering a Safe Sitter Class to boys and girls ages 11 and up. Safe Sitter is a child and infant sitting curriculum that teaches choking rescue, basic first aid, babysitting as a business, babysitter safety, basic child development, infant diapering and feeding, and much more. The class will be held in the Elkhart Middle School library on Saturday, March 3 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
