Houston-Trinity County Shared Services is pleased to announce the creation of a scholarship fund in honor of Shirley Patrick Allen, who recently retired after 24 years of service as director of the special education cooperative.

Elkhart Middle School is offering a Safe Sitter Class to boys and girls ages 11 and up. Safe Sitter is a child and infant sitting curriculum that teaches choking rescue, basic first aid, babysitting as a business, babysitter safety, basic child development, infant diapering and feeding, and much more. The class will be held in the Elkhart Middle School library on Saturday, March 3 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Grapeland Independent School District is presently accepting nominations for students currently enrolled in kindergarten through fifth grade to be screened, tested, and considered for the Advanced Academics Program.

The Major Jarrell Beasley Chapter NSDAR is for the first time, offering a $500 college scholarship to a graduating senior. Thus far, there have been no applications submitted! Seniors, if you’re going to college, and would like to be considered for this scholarship, please see your high school counselor to get an application form. The deadline is February 1.

KENNARD - The Kennard Independent Board of Trustees met in its regular monthly meeting on Thursday, Jan. 12. The major area that was discussed concerned the recently completed financial audit of the district.

LATEXO - Latexo Independent School District came out ahead in the 2010-2011 school year.
According to Superintendent Don Elsom, the district ended the fiscal year with more than $100,000 than originally budgeted.
“Our budget broke even, but we gained more revenue,” Elsom said. “So there’s going to be more money in the fund balance.”

CROCKETT - The Crockett Independent School District Board of Trustees met for the second time in two nights on Tuesday, Jan. 10.
The first meeting held on Jan. 9 was a review of the district’s financial audit. The purpose of Tuesday evening’s meeting was to consider and approve a bid for architectural/engineering services for the proposed Andrew J. Hopkins Monolithic Dome/Safe Room. Board member Karen Johnson had a prior commitment and was unable to attend.

The Grapeland FFA participated in the State Leadership Contest at Sam Houston State University on Friday, Dec. 2 and Saturday, Dec. 3. The Senior Quiz Team placed 10th in a very close and challenging competition. Atlana Watson was the fourth high individual. Other team members were Julie Riess, Brittany McCoy and Liz Diehl.
